This Season's Avant Gardner

SEPTEMBER 16, 7:00
LEFT COAST
Music by John Adams, James Tenney, Lou Harrison, and Terry Riley

A new way of thinking about music-making—intuitive, experimental, embracing repetition and a return to tonality—has marked much of the music coming from America’s other coastline. We sample three generations of composers from Alaska to California who put old and familiar sounds to new and unfamiliar uses, highlighting that über-classic of American Minimalism, Terry Riley’s In C.
